I got this lens at a very reasonable price of a hundred and thirty pounds and I am delighted with it. At that price is was an absolute steal given the quality of the lens. The AF works well including in lowish lighting conditions. At the lower end of the zoom the aperture is f4 compared to f5.6 at the same point on the 18-55mm lens. The comparatively light weight means it is more amenable to hand held operation than you would expect. Someone has already commented that vignetting can be a problem when the lens is wide open but aside from that (and once you are aware you can make adjustments to avoid the problem) it is difficult to fault this lens.

There are better lenses available but at more than twice the price (and with extra weight) you would need to be very keen to justify the extra cost. This lens offers staggering value for money.

Bought this to give me a good range increase from my 18-55mm lens, the Image stability is nice especially if your out in the cold without gloves.

The build quality is good, it’s a moderate weight but the balance stays in the back close to the camera body.

Has firm focus ring control and comfortable to operate in manual.

Macro distance for this lens is 1.1m/3.6ft

like all standard canon lenses this Does not come with a lens Hood. You will want a cylindrical hood (ET-60) as petal hoods will Spin when focusing with this model.

Very good for beginners. Suggest a tripod for best photo quality though the image stabilizer is good.

Cons- No Canon warranty in the box. Don’t even have the serial number mentioned anywhere in packaging or on the lens. No way to tell if it is genuine Canon product.

Anyway I am keeping it as I am satisfied with the product quality

For a zoom which is the equivalent to an 88-400mm zoom on a 35mm film camera, this lens is delightfully light and compact. (I’m getting too old to be humping huge lumps of metal like I did in the 70’s). Maximum aperture at 250mm is only f5.6, but this is more than made up for by the excellence of the version 2 image stabiliser mechanism. I haven’t done any critical tests but get the feeling this adds at least 2 stops of extra usability at the slow end. Construction is all plastic (not surprising on an item which cost me £135 from Amazon in April 2012 – price has since risen slightly) but the plastic has a ‘quality’ feel to it. Personally I don’t have any problem with the use of high quality plastics in cameras and lenses. Out of steel, light metal alloys and polycarbonate plastic, polycarbonate is the one used in bullet proof vests.

Image quality, at least on my sample, can only be described as excellent. Sharp as a pin and lovely colours and contrast. Flare seems well controlled. Pincushion distortion is not noticeable in general photography. If you think yours is soft, my advice would be to return it immediately as faulty and ask for a replacement or your money back.

The star is given only based on the packing cover and the lens cap issue. The review regarding the perfomance will be updated once i get the replacement. The item came in a local box instead of the orginal one. And the front lens cap was stuck to it, was not able to open it also. The box contain warranty card too. Because it came in as nameless plain box, and lens cap had this problem, I requested for a replacement. let’s see how the replacement item comes.

Starting with the lens, I liked the lens, gives me freedom to zoom beyond the prime 18-55mm lens. Telephoto lens produces nice and bright photos however often struggles to focus on objects I prefer. Since it’s not STM, motor makes a lot of sound which can be annoying at times.

Price: I bought this for 10999 which is decent price, the newer lens with STM costs approx 15k. Obviously this is cheap but misses a lot of features which newer lens has.

Warranty: Forget about it! Although seller claims 1+1 years warranty however Canon straight away denied it, requested for duly filled warranty card which wasn’t provided by the seller. While trying to register, it turned out that the lens is part of 1500d therefore, there is no warranty unless warranty card provided.

Packing: The lens came in plain white box without branding, Amazon generated GST Bill is useless, Canon does not honor it. Warranty card sent by seller was an unfilled, color photocopy of original warranty card. There is not stamp, seal or signature on the card.

While the price is reasonable, I am cautious of the fact that this lens doesn’t carry Canon warranty hence have 2 minds. I am still negotiating with Canon, hope things workout.

comes with normal white box (no canon official box), brought it for 11300 now price increased ,there is no bill and serial number register for warrenty (dont know about ) , but the lense was original and take some photos with it , only you can use the lens on outdoors , its not fit for indoor and low light area (becasue of apature value) but in outdoors the zoooooming was amazing ,clear photo this is my second lens (first one was kit lens) , worth for money ..attach more photos

A great lens, I’ve already had some really good results. I tend not to bother with my standard lens as this lens covers both close and distant shots equally well.
I think that Canon lens are very expensive, although this was cheaper with it being an older model.
I know why Canon have built the IS feature into their lens rather than the camera, so that they can charge more for the lens, Hence 4 rather than 5 stars.
I must say that I find many of Canon’s products a bit penny pinching. My EOS 700D came without a storage card, cost to Canon pence, cost to their reputation priceless.

The product itself is great. Problem is at the seller’s end since he’s been selling a kit lens as a standalone lens. The problem arises when you cannot avail the 2 yrs warranty since there is no warranty card, product no etc. whatsoever. Bad seller. Very disappointing act. Hope this does not happen on my next order.

The product works well but I already have some dust issues in my lens. For now, it’s not showing any kind of involvement in reducing the quality of my pictures. But it’s definitely not a fresh product which is being supplied to me. For now, I won’t complain but it’s definitely something you should keep in mind before buying it from this seller. Good at it’s price. A must have tele for beginners. Don’t get into the trap of getting a cheaper tamron or sigma. IS is the real deal!

I bought this a few days ago and managed to get some decent use for it at the Paralympics last night.

It is brilliant. I am very much a novice at SLRs and only bought my Canon 600D a few months ago.

One thing as per previous review, it is nice and tight, it doesn’t “zoom creep”. but not stiff enough to stop you from getting the right zoom you want straight away.

The other thing is after a few hours of constant use yesterday, the camera does start to feel a bit heavy. but the lens is quite light though.

I would def recommend this for a novice/recreational photo taker, its very reasonably priced vs the next grade up of canon lenses.

Final thing, I have a lowe pro bag, Nova 160. The camera with this lens on it fits comfortably in the bag and the 18-55mm lens fits in the side well.

    Happy snapping!
